Why Interlocks?
Deciding to loc your hair is major! Once you take that leap you have to figure out which type of locs you want. This is no easy task because there are so many types, ways to start them and ways to maintain them.
Types of Locs
Freeform Locs
Traditional Locs
Microlocs — Braids/Two Strand Twists
Interlocks
Sisterlocks
When I was deciding on my loc type, I did research on all of them, paying specific attention to maintenance and cost. While I knew I was leaning towards the smaller options, I found it fascinating how many unique ways this process could go. From coils, to two strand twists and palm rolling vs. interlocking, I had a lot to learn and process. I spent many late nights going down YouTube rabbit holes and scrolling to the bottom of several Instagram feeds. I studied so many beautiful loc journeys all while trying to picture how some of these sizes and types would look on my round face.
However, the bigger, more affordable option known as interlocks were new to me.
At some point my searches all started to be based in the sisterlock/interlock world. I had developed an obsession with the tiny and super versatile hair system as I continued to explore. My aunt has sisterlocks that I’ve always loved and admired, so I knew a little bit about them. However, the bigger, more affordable option known as interlocks were new to me. With these, I loved that I could still have a beautiful grid and maintain using the interlocking method. Most importantly, I got really excited at the idea of getting many of the perks of sisterlocks without the length of time to establish + retighten and that price honey!? A win all around.
